Ballet Point Shoes? ***Xpost****

Hello all!

My question is this:

My ballet teacher want me to put on point shoes, but I am affraid it will distort or make me feet ugly....

I am a 30 y.o. fusion bellydance teacher/performer and I take ballet to improve my balance and obtain stronger legs.

What do you think? Can I safely put on point?

If you trust your teacher to train you adequately, there should be no problem. Incorrect training and poor practice habits or ill-fitting pointe shoes will damage your feet, not pointe dancing per se. Pointe work should be an extention of work on demi-pointe; if you are dancing correctly on demi-pointe and the pointe shoes fit correctly, there should be no problem. I, too, do Tribal Fusion, and danced on pointe daily until I was thirty, and I have no hesitation now in performing barefoot. Far from making my feet ugly, dancing on pointe made my feet strong and supple (### decades later, I can still stand on pointe in my soft ballet shoes, although I can no longer walk across the floor on pointe). Your teacher should be able to guide you through your first experiences on pointe and help you to tell how it should feel. You will have some discomfort at first as you become accustomed to dancing on the tips of your toes, and as you break in the shoes, but in time, if you practice long enough, pointe dancing should become second nature.
