I think what I mean to say is, could I be a macho dude and still enjoy ballet? I know I like the female dancers.. a lot.

I'd wear tights for a chance to hit that.

eating disorders?

Something I've been wondering for a while about ballerinas so I thought I'd ask ballerinas. I'm involved in a different form of dance and occasionally hear someone say they're too fat to dance. In online discussions someone usually says in ballet eating disorders are the norm.

But I've seen ballet and don't need to take a class to know that's hard work and it'd be more difficult if you didn't eat. So are eating disorders common or just a steriotype like all male ballet dancers are gay?

Ballet Point Shoes? *Xpost**

Hello all!

My question is this:

My ballet teacher want me to put on point shoes, but I am affraid it will distort or make me feet ugly....

I am a 30 y.o. fusion bellydance teacher/performer and I take ballet to improve my balance and obtain stronger legs.

What do you think? Can I safely put on point?

Cheap shows in LA

Hi everyone, I'm moving to LA soon and would like to find cool, affordable performances to sit in on. Caught the Nutcracker for Christmas. That was pretty much my first ballet experience, and now I want more!!! I'd like to check out Swan Lake, but I'm up for anything. A friend told me there are venues where you can crash rehearsals for free or a donation. Would LA have places like that? I'm basically a starving artist who's gonna be new in town, so blowing $100 for a show isn't gonna be possible.

Grand plies in the 21st century

There is a growing debate about the appropriateness of performing grand plies early in the barre. Some highly regarded dance teachers and choreographers are even questioning whether grand plies in 1st, 4th, and/or 5th should be done at all.

I have been doing extensive research on this subject, on the internet. While I have yet to find definitive biomechanical findings, or a long term research study that clearly delineates a cost vs. benefit relationship regarding grand plies, I do have concerns, and have determined to be highly judicious in my use of grand plies in 1st, 3rd, and 5th in the weekly classes I teach. I do think that dance training has lagged behind in incorporating and applying the advances in exercise science that have directly
and positively impacted training in other athletic disciplines and fitness training for the general healthy adult population.

I'm very interested in your thoughts:
Where should grand plies occur in the barre, and which should be given?
Are there other, safer exercises that can accomplish some of the same benefits attributed to grand plies, and in fact are any of the benefits attributed to grand plies really measurable, or proven- in other words, will dancers experience significant detriments to strength, flexibility or technique if they do not perform grand plies in 1st, 3rd, and 5th?
If the most compelling argument for retaining grand plies in some positions is "tradition," is it really a valid argument at all?

(Please note that I have no issues with demi-plies in dance training, as there is a clear and direct correlation between demi-plies in all positions and the jumps, turns, and linking steps which comprise the center work, enchainements, and choreography. My concerns are strictly with grand plies

do gaynor mindens weaken your feet?

i got fitted for gaynor mindens at a seminar at cpyb and they felt amazing, however, I've been hesitant to purchase my own pair because of the various rumors (facts?) that the pre-arched shoes don't make your feet work as much, therefore weakening your feet. I have also heard that once a dancer begins to wear gaynors, all other shoes are too difficult to dance in.

is any of this true?

I was saddened to read of Melissa Hayden's death today inthe New York Times (C15). She was 83 and died in her home in Raliegh, NC of pancreatic cancer.

Paul Taylor Dance Company Master Classes in Hillsboro!!!

Acclaimed Paul Taylor Dance Company dancer, Julie Tice will be teaching two master classes in the Portland area on Saturday, July 15 , 2006 at The Northwest Conservatory of Dance. These two classes, one for intermediate and one for advanced students, provide dancers with a rare and important opportunity to study locally the choreography and style of the man widely considered to be the world's greatest modern dance choreographer.

Both master classes with Julie Tice take place on Saturday, July 15th at The Northwest Conservatory of Dance, located at 1055 NE 25th Ave., Suite G in Hillsboro, Oregon. Advanced registration is recommended as space is limited. Classes are open to intermediate and advanced dancers of ages 10 and up. The cost for the Intermediate Modern class, which takes place from 10:00am to 12:00pm, is $35, payable upon registration. The cost for the Advanced Modern & Repertory class, which takes place from 1:00pm to 5:30pm (includes short snack break), is $70, payable upon registration. For more information, dancers should visit www.northwestconservatoryofdance.com. To register, dancers should call The Northwest Conservatory of Dance at 503.693.8362, or stop by their studio.

One reason that these master classes with Tice are so valuable is that the availability of modern dance studies in the region has diminished greatly since Portland State University ceased their B.F.A. dance program. Jennifer Camp, Artistic Director for Pacific University agrees that there is now a lack of Modern Dance being offered in the region. Because dancers must travel outside of Oregon to gain the necessary exposure to further their studies and develop their skills, many find they cannot afford such necessary, quality training.

According to Nicole McCall, Director of Northwest Conservatory of Dance, "we are committed to bringing nationally acclaimed artists to the Portland area. Bringing a Paul Taylor dancer here to teach provides the easiest, fastest, and most affordable way for any serious dancer to boost their resume. In terms of auditioning for scholarships to prestigious dance programs, classes like these master classes with Julie Tice are incredibly important and helpful. This is an amazing opportunity for dancers to share in the legacy of one of the world's most versatile, prolific, and important choreographer's of modern dance and contemporary ballet."

And The Times of London agrees, "If Paul Taylor is not the best choreographer to emerge in any style anywhere in the world in the past quarter of a century, who is?"

Julie Tice grew up dancing with the Springfield Ballet Company, before continuing her training at the University of Michigan where she earned a B.F.A. in dance with honors. A dancer of remarkable ability, Julie went on to become a scholarship student at The Paul Taylor School in January 1999, and debuted as a member of the Paul Taylor Dance Company less than two years later in the Fall of 2000. As a member of Taylor's dance company, Julie shares an esteemed place alongside some of the greatest dancers of all time. Paul Taylor, who began his career as a student of Martha Graham, is credited with teaching Laura Dean, Twyla Tharp, Dan Wagoner, and Senta Driver among other notable dancers.

Want to gain experience as a dance instructor?

Hi!

I am looking for a private ballet teacher for 1 - 2 hours of work a week in the Hollywood, CA area. My front room is empty and has a hardwood floor. I also have my own barre. Last year I took 4 hours a week of classical ballet and classical Armenian dance while overseas. I would be happy to work with a beginning teacher and to recommend you to other people and to spread the word. What I am looking for is someone to lead me through a basic floor and barre warm up and then through simple exercises or choreographies. Compensation between $20 to $25 an hour depending on your experience. This would be one evening a week.

what would you do?

I have been a student of ballet since I was a little girl, but it was never consistent. I was a dance major for a while but I felt so out of it because everyone else had been doing it forever and I felt like I just couldn't compare. The thing is, I just LOVE ballet so so so much. And I always just start taking a class again, you know like some adult ballet class, and it's still fun and all, but it's like I never go anywhere with it. I want to start again, and really stick with it, but I am wondering if it is just a lost cause now. I mean I know I will never be pro, but I just like it for my own sense of fulfillment. Any advice?

I've been reading some of the interviews on Answers 4 Dancers (www.answers4dancers.com) lately and I've just gotta say, the practical value for serious dancers is absolutely amazing. What people like Grover Dale, Tina Landon and Michael Rooney have to say about the audition and rehearsal processes are so honest, revealing and relevant that I think every professional or performing dancer should know about it.

I have no financial stake in A4D so you know I'm telling it straight when I say it is just about the best $8.33 a month I've ever spent. There is a lot of information on the free pages as well, so you can truly try before you buy. Here's the link to Grover Dale's biography, which I find particularly inspiring- Grover's expertise, kindness, and knowledge of not only the industry but the people in it are legendary!

Gaynor Minden Shoes for sale

so here's the deal:

i got these shoes years ago and the person ho fitted me didn't know what they weer doing (neither did i - i was too young) and I did not find out that the shoes did not fit until the first time i wore them.

I have these really awesome gaynor minden shoes that have ribbons and elastics sewn on (i have no idea why i did both at the time) and have been worn only once.

they have not been worked in at all. the only sign of wear is some scuff marks on the satin. they are in the original bag and still have the "special cushion kit" (foam pieces in all shapes to fit your box) that comes with Gaynor minden's.

i am leaving Canada and am willing to sell them for cheap. they are size 8.5 (remember that Gaynor minden has unusual sizing)

ABT SWAN LAKE ON PBS JUNE 26TH

Did anyone see ABT's full length production of Swan Lake on Mon on PBS??? Starred Gillian Murphy and Angel Corella. She is an Amazing technician and her version of the 32 fouettes in the Black Swan Pas de Deux was spellbinding! They will be doing a re-broadcast this Sun June 26th on PBS. wonderful!!!

Greetings to the ballet tribe from England

Hey tribester friends-

Just finished a four day Congress of the International Society for the Performing Arts, here in Gateshead, England, and it was amazing. The presentations were top knotch, I was able to meet and share ideas with some of the world leaders in the performing arts, including managers from the Barbican Center London, the Miami Performing Arts Center, major European Festivals, South Africa, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the list goes on and on. I was also able to share some of BelCobraDance's work with some of the delegates and began relationships which can lead to future touring and international artistic exchange. We also had dinner in an ancient castle and lunch in an old church, and saw world class symphony.

In addition to the performing itinerary I posted recently, I'll also be performing, as it turns out, at the 4 level superclub, Sahara Nights, in London June 23rd (near King's Cross tube station, show at 8:30). If you're in London, hope to see you there, or at the Rugby show June 30th (Benn Hall, doors open at 7 P.M., may be sold out?) or at the Southend-on-Sea show (The Plaza, doors open at 7 P.M.)

I love England!

Have you ever named your shoes?

While we're asking questions about ballet shoes, in one of my classes a whole group of us named our shoes instead of just writing our own names inside. Each foot had a different name. Mine, for example were Anna (Anna Pavlova) & Aurora (as in, Sleeping Beauty is my favorite ballet)!

getting back into it

won't make this post drag but the short version is, i danced for 13 years. i haven't been dancing for the past few years due to life at large and it's affecting me in every area of my life. i need to dance again.

any suggestions for getting back into dancing after a few years off?
does anybody know of any good and somewhat inexpensive studios in atlanta, ga to check out? i've danced at both ruth mitchell and the atlanta ballet...

ok, so I am rediculously attracted to ballerinas. I think it started as a kid with "Cats", and as I grew and couldnt find any more grown women dressed as cats, my interest strayed to ballet. I dream of having my very own one day, who I can feed grapes and fan with palm leaves. Anyone else have this problem?

Where does your interest in ballet stem from? Do you find it beautiful? Wish you could dance but can't? Just like watching? Have you been taking classes for years? Just started? ect...

Personally, I'm pretty much all of the above! I've always found ballet to be breathtaking, I'm not very good at it, you know..wish I were more graceful, I do enjoy watching a good ballet, I've been taking classes twice a week for 3 years.

I really do love it, hard work and suffering that it is!

i am not a ballerina, but i think about it an awful lot... sometimes when i dance, i wish i had toe-shoes to give me that little extra lift that the note calls for.... ive been thinking about getting some, but fear being fitted and
"talked to" by professionals.

well, last night i dreamed that i was teaching a young person about ballet. posistion #1, the child wasnt listening or watching me and i was getting annoyed. then, the child raised up on to her/his (i couldnt tell) toes and became very excited. i put my hand on his? shoulder and pushed firmly til she? was rooted flatly on the ground. i was angry- saying things like: "you cant do that 'til you know all of the basics!!! you will hurt your feet!!! you cant do that!!"

i was sad when i thought back on this dream. i wish the child would have turned to me and said "screw you!" and floated around the room on toes. but i guess i was the child, and so i have decided to go and purchase toe shoes tomorrow. so, ill say this- to my fear of judgement: "screw you". hee hee.

SF Ballet Ballanchine Superb

Saw last Sunday's Matinee SF Ballet performance of
Ballanchine's Serenade, Apollo, and Four Temperaments.
Overall this was a phenomenal performance. It looks to
me like the SF Ballet has moved up a notch in overall
depth in the 2-3 years since I last saw them. The dancing
was crisp and beautiful. It must have been something to
have seen Apollo in 1928 when it premiered.

I'm hoping to check out the upcoming Ashton (re. Royal
Ballet famous choreographer) program later this month,
which should be equally fabulous.

Now I just have to see the NYC Ballet again (saw them
in 1999, stunning to say the least).

Ever just WISH?

Do you ever (if you're not pro already) ..when you watch a pro dancer...that you could just DO that? They really do make it look so effortless and I am so obssessed by Ballet it's crazy. When I stop practising...I will STILL go to ballets and take pics. I have a HUGE scrap book of pics I've cut out of "Pointe" magazine and others..as well as the interenet. I can't get enough of ballet.
